Val d'Oise: Charles de Gaulle Airport and the Vexin
Val d'Oise lies north of Paris and was created in 1968 from the old Seine-et-Oise department. Cergy-Pontoise, the prefecture, is a new town built from the 1970s and anchored by a university of over 30,000 students. Roissy-en-France hosts Charles de Gaulle Airport, the busiest airport in continental Europe and a massive economic driver for the department. The airport alone supports tens of thousands of jobs.
The department's southern portion is suburban and densely populated, while the northern half, the Vexin francais, is rolling agricultural countryside protected as a regional nature park. Auvers-sur-Oise is where Vincent van Gogh spent his final months and painted seventy canvases in seventy days before his death in 1890. Enghien-les-Bains has the only lake spa and casino in the Paris region. The population exceeds 1.27 million.
