Val-de-Marne: Diverse Inner Suburbs South of Paris
Val-de-Marne occupies the southeastern inner suburbs of Paris. Creteil, the prefecture, was developed as a new town in the 1960s and 1970s with distinctive modernist architecture including the Choux de Creteil residential towers. The department sits along the confluence of the Seine and the Marne rivers, giving it its name. The Bois de Vincennes, technically in Paris but bordering Val-de-Marne, contains the Chateau de Vincennes and the Paris Zoo.
With over 1.4 million residents packed into a small area, Val-de-Marne is densely populated and ethnically diverse. Orly Airport sits partly within the department. Vitry-sur-Seine is known for its street art scene, while Vincennes and Saint-Mande are among the more affluent communes. The MAC/VAL contemporary art museum in Vitry and the Marche International de Rungis (the world's largest wholesale food market, replacing Les Halles in 1969) are notable landmarks.
