Tarn: Albi's Red Cathedral and Toulouse-Lautrec's Birthplace
Tarn lies in the Occitanie region of southern France. Albi, the prefecture, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose old town is dominated by the massive Sainte-Cecile Cathedral, the largest brick cathedral in the world. The Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, housed in the Palais de la Berbie, holds the largest collection of the painter's work. He was born in Albi in 1864.
Castres, the department's second city, sits on the Agout river and is the headquarters of Pierre Fabre Laboratories, a major pharmaceutical and cosmetics company. The Sidobre plateau east of Castres is a landscape of enormous granite boulders in bizarre formations. The department has about 389,000 residents. The Tarn river cuts through dramatic gorges in the east before winding through gentler countryside toward Albi.
