Corse-du-Sud (South Corsica) includes Ajaccio, the island's largest city and Napoleon Bonaparte's birthplace. His childhood home on Rue Saint-Charles is a museum. Bonifacio, at the island's southern tip, sits on white limestone cliffs above a fjord-like harbour. Sartene, in the interior, was described by Prosper Merimee as 'the most Corsican of Corsican towns.' The population is about 166,000. The department includes the prehistoric site of Filitosa, with carved menhirs dating to around 1500 BC.
