Manche occupies the Cotentin Peninsula, the arm of Normandy that juts into the English Channel. Mont-Saint-Michel, at the department's southern border, is one of the most visited sites in France and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint-Lo, the prefecture, was almost entirely destroyed in 1944 bombing and rebuilt from scratch, earning it the title 'Capital of Ruins.' The Utah Beach D-Day landing zone is in the department, and Sainte-Mere-Eglise, where American paratroopers landed, is another key site. The population is about 497,000. The nuclear fuel reprocessing plant at La Hague, on the peninsula's northwestern tip, is a major employer and a source of ongoing environmental debate.
