Isere: Grenoble, Three Mountain Ranges, and Scientific Research
Isere is dominated by Grenoble, a city of 160,000 (over 700,000 in the metropolitan area) wedged between three mountain ranges: the Chartreuse, Vercors, and Belledonne. Grenoble hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics, which modernised the city and its infrastructure. It is now one of France's most important centres for scientific research, with a synchrotron, a neutron research reactor, and campuses shared between the university, CNRS, and CEA.
The Vercors massif, south of Grenoble, was a major Resistance stronghold during World War II and is now a regional natural park. Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes are major ski resorts in the department. The Chartreuse range produces the famous green and yellow liqueurs made by Carthusian monks. Vienne, in the north, has significant Roman ruins including a temple and theatre. The population exceeds 1.29 million.
