Herault: Montpellier, Sete, and Languedoc Wine
Herault stretches along the Mediterranean coast in the Languedoc. Montpellier, the prefecture, is one of France's fastest-growing cities, driven by a young population (one in three residents is a student), a medical faculty founded in 1220 (the oldest in continuous operation in Europe), and a strong tech sector. The Place de la Comedie and the Antigone district (designed by Ricardo Bofill) define the city centre.
Sete, built on a hill between the Etang de Thau lagoon and the sea, is the department's other major town, known for its fishing port, its water jousting festivals, and as the birthplace of poet Paul Valery and singer Georges Brassens. Beziers, further west, hosts the Feria in August. The Canal du Midi passes through the department. The population exceeds 1.2 million. Languedoc wine, long dismissed as bulk production, has improved dramatically and offers some of France's best value.
