Haute-Savoie borders Switzerland and contains some of France's most famous Alpine territory. Chamonix sits at the foot of Mont Blanc (4,808 metres), the highest peak in Western Europe. Annecy, the prefecture, wraps around a crystal-clear lake and a medieval old town that makes it one of the most photogenic cities in France. The department also includes Megeve, La Clusaz, and parts of the Portes du Soleil ski area.
Like neighbouring Savoie, Haute-Savoie only became French in 1860. The proximity to Geneva means tens of thousands of cross-border commuters (frontaliers) work in Switzerland while living in France, which has driven property prices to some of the highest outside Paris. Evian-les-Bains produces the mineral water. Thonon-les-Bains sits on Lake Geneva. The population is about 850,000 and growing rapidly.
