Langres, perched on a promontory and surrounded by ramparts, was the birthplace of Denis Diderot, editor of the Encyclopedie. Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, in the department's west, was the home of Charles de Gaulle; his memorial and the Cross of Lorraine are visible for miles. The population is about 170,000. The department is known for its metallurgical industry (Nogent is a cutlery centre) and the Bassigny plateau, one of the emptiest areas in northern France.
