Gard: Roman Nimes, the Pont du Gard, and Cevennes Country
Gard stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the Cevennes mountains. Nimes, the prefecture, has some of the best-preserved Roman monuments outside Italy: the Arena (still used for bullfights and concerts), the Maison Carree (a near-perfect Roman temple), and the Pont du Gard aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site twenty kilometres northeast of the city. The Maison Carree was the inspiration for the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond.
The Cevennes mountains in the department's north are associated with the Camisard Protestant revolt of 1702-1710 and Robert Louis Stevenson's travels. Ales is the main town in the Cevennes foothills. Aigues-Mortes, a perfectly preserved medieval walled town on the flat Camargue plain, was the port from which Louis IX launched two Crusades. The Camargue itself, with its wild horses, flamingos, and salt marshes, extends into the department's southern edge. The population is about 745,000.
