Drome: Montelimar Nougat, Lavender, and the Facteur Cheval
Drome lies in the Rhone valley between Lyon and Provence, and its southern portion marks the beginning of the Midi. Valence, the prefecture, sits on the Rhone opposite the Ardeche. The Palais Ideal du Facteur Cheval at Hauterives, a fantastical structure built single-handedly by a postman over thirty-three years (1879-1912), is classified as a historical monument and is one of France's most extraordinary folk art creations.
Montelimar is synonymous with nougat. The Drome provencale, in the department's south, has lavender fields and perched villages that feel indistinguishable from Provence. Nyons produces excellent olive oil. Die, in the Vercors foothills, makes Clairette de Die, a sparkling wine. The population is about 521,000. The department offers an affordable alternative to Provence proper, with similar landscapes at lower property prices.
