Correze: Two Presidents and the Dordogne's Source
Correze, in the Limousin, has produced two French presidents: Jacques Chirac (who represented the department for decades) and Francois Hollande. Tulle, the prefecture, is a small town in a narrow valley known for lace (tulle fabric takes its name from the city) and for an accordion factory. Brive-la-Gaillarde, the larger town, is a commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural region.
The Dordogne river rises in the department and flows through dramatic gorges. Collonges-la-Rouge is a village built entirely of red sandstone. The Millevaches plateau, in the department's north, is a high, sparsely populated moorland. The population is about 240,000 and declining.
