Calvados: D-Day Beaches, Apple Brandy, and William the Conqueror
Calvados gives its name to the apple brandy produced throughout the department and is forever associated with June 6, 1944. The D-Day landing beaches (Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword, all in Calvados) and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer receive millions of visitors. Bayeux holds both the famous Tapestry depicting the 1066 Norman Conquest and the first museum on the European mainland to be liberated.
Caen, the prefecture, was William the Conqueror's capital and holds his Abbaye aux Hommes and the Caen Memorial museum. The city was devastated in 1944 and largely rebuilt in stone quarried from the same beds used in the Middle Ages. Deauville and Trouville are elegant seaside resorts. Honfleur's harbour, painted by Boudin, Monet, and others, helped launch Impressionism. The Pays d'Auge produces Camembert, Pont-l'Eveque, and Livarot cheeses. The population exceeds 700,000.
