Aveyron: Millau Viaduct, Roquefort, and the Tarn Gorges
Aveyron is a large, rugged department in the southern Massif Central. The Millau Viaduct, designed by Norman Foster and opened in 2004, spans the Tarn valley at a maximum height of 343 metres, making it the tallest bridge structure in the world. Rodez, the prefecture, has a Gothic cathedral with an ornate bell tower and the Musee Soulages, dedicated to the abstract painter Pierre Soulages who was born here.
Roquefort-sur-Soulzon is where Roquefort cheese has been aged in natural limestone caves for centuries; it holds AOC protection and is one of the most regulated food products in France. Conques, a village on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, has an abbey church with a celebrated Last Judgement tympanum and a treasury of medieval goldwork. The population is about 280,000. The Grands Causses limestone plateaux and the Tarn Gorges provide dramatic landscapes.
