Aube: Troyes, Champagne Fairs, and Half-Timbered Streets
Aube sits in the Champagne region, and its vineyards in the Cote des Bar area produce a significant share of Champagne's output, though they have historically been overshadowed by the more prestigious Marne houses. Troyes, the prefecture, has one of the finest collections of half-timbered houses in France and a medieval centre shaped like a champagne cork (which may or may not be coincidental).
Troyes was also the medieval capital of the Champagne fairs, the great trading events that connected northern and southern Europe. The city's churches contain outstanding sixteenth-century stained glass. Factory outlet stores on the outskirts of Troyes draw shoppers from across eastern France. Clairvaux Abbey, founded by Saint Bernard in 1115, is now a prison. The population is about 310,000. The Seine and Aube rivers converge in the department.
