Yonne: Chablis Country and Northern Burgundy
Yonne occupies the northwestern corner of Burgundy, named after the river that flows through it on its way to join the Seine. Auxerre, the prefecture, is a small city of around 35,000 known for its medieval old town, the Abbey of Saint-Germain, and a football club that briefly reached Ligue 1. Sens, the second city, has a cathedral that predates Notre-Dame de Paris and was one of the first Gothic structures in France.
The department is predominantly rural with a population under 340,000. Vineyards around Chablis produce some of the world's most recognizable white wine. The northern Yonne is geographically closer to Paris than to Dijon, and many residents commute to the capital region.
