Vienne, not to be confused with the Austrian capital, is a department in western-central France with Poitiers as its prefecture. Poitiers is a significant university city with over 28,000 students and a history stretching back to the Battle of Poitiers in 732, where Charles Martel halted the Umayyad advance. The Futuroscope theme park, built in 1987 north of Poitiers, focuses on multimedia and technology-based attractions and draws roughly two million visitors annually.
The department has a population of about 438,000 spread across a largely agricultural landscape. Chatellerault, the second-largest town, was historically important for arms manufacturing. The TGV connects Poitiers to Paris in under ninety minutes, making it accessible despite its provincial character.
