Morbihan: Carnac Stones, the Gulf, and Celtic Festivals
Morbihan, meaning 'little sea' in Breton, is named after the Gulf of Morbihan, a large natural harbour dotted with islands off the southern Brittany coast. Vannes, the prefecture, is a walled medieval city. The Carnac alignments, rows of over 3,000 standing stones dating to around 4500 BC, are the largest megalithic site in the world and predate Stonehenge by two thousand years.
Lorient hosts the Interceltique Festival every August, the largest Celtic cultural gathering in the world. Belle-Ile-en-Mer, the largest of Brittany's islands, lies off the Quiberon peninsula. The department has about 776,000 residents. Pontivy, an inland town with a Napoleonic quarter, and Ploermel serve the rural interior. Morbihan's oyster beds, particularly around the Gulf, produce significant quantities of flat and cupped oysters.
